Biomass Atlas

Sylvera — version 2.1 (2026-01-01)

This dataset quantifies aboveground biomass density (Mg/ha) and forest canopy height (m) at 30 m spatial resolution, with global coverage annually from 2000 onwards. Pixel-level residual standard error is provided for both variables. Quality assurance layers describing gap filling, observation availability, and model calibration source are also included.

New time points are delivered in Q1 for the previous year. Spatial coverage is limited to land surfaces between 81.8°N and 81.8°S, excluding ice sheets. The dataset uses seven region-specific canopy height models and twenty biome-specific biomass models.

Quality assurance layers describing model calibration source, observation availability, and green period definition are time-invariant and are delivered without a time dimension.

Documentation for version 1.0 of this dataset is available in the resources section.

above_ground_biomass_density

Typefloat32NoDataNaNUnitsMg/ha

Description

Aboveground biomass density of dry matter in live woody vegetation on a per hectare basis. Data is generated using biome-specific non-linear regression models calibrated on allometric-free multi-scale LiDAR or GEDI L4A allometric-derived biomass data to convert canopy height values into aboveground biomass.

Usage notes

Calculations are designed for areas with live woody aboveground biomass. Models are calibrated on multi-scale LiDAR data where available and GEDI L4A biomass data otherwise (see above ground biomass multiscale lidar variable). Biome-specific models may result in artefacts for AOIs that span biome borders. Values lying outside first observation and last observation variable years are filled with values of the fitted model from first and last valid observation years, respectively.

above_ground_biomass_density_residual_standard_error

Typefloat32NoDataNaNUnitsMg/ha

Description

Residual standard error for above ground biomass density variable.

above_ground_biomass_multiscale_lidar

Typeint8NoData-1Units%

Description

Percentage contribution that multi-scale LiDAR (MSL) based biomass models made to reported above ground biomass density variable.

Usage notes

A value of 100 indicates the reported value derives entirely from MSL-based models, and a value of 0 indicates it derives entirely from GEDI L4A or peer-reviewed airborne LiDAR models. Multi-scale LiDAR data is not yet available for all regions and biomes but coverage increases as new data becomes available from ongoing field campaigns.

canopy_height

Typefloat32NoDataNaNUnitsm

Description

Canopy height of the 95th percentile of woody vegetation. Data is generated using region-specific machine learning models that predict GEDI canopy height data from a range of spaceborne remote sensing datasets.

Usage notes

Canopy heights < 3 m are unreliable due to minimum detection limits of the GEDI instrument. Region-specific models may result in artefacts for AOIs that span borders. Values lying outside first observation and last observation variable years are filled with values of the fitted model from first and last valid observation years, respectively.

canopy_height_raw

Typefloat32NoDataNaNUnitsm

Description

Canopy height of the 95th percentile of woody vegetation, without post-processing applied.

Usage notes

Canopy height variable should be preferred in the majority of contexts. Canopy height raw variable can be useful when analysing early stage growth, although it may contain gaps.

canopy_height_residual_standard_error

Typefloat32NoDataNaNUnitsm

Description

Residual standard error for canopy height variable.

computed

TypeboolNoDataFalse

Description

Binary mask indicating where data has been materialised for the dataset.

end_day

Typeint16NoData-1

Description

Day of year of the end of the green period, inclusive, which defines the temporal window of scenes that can contribute to the Landsat composites.

Usage notes

Values range from 1 to 366. See start day variable for definition of the green period window.

first_observation

Typeint8NoData-1

Description

Offset in years from 2000-01-01 to first observation considered in fitting the canopy height time series for a pixel.

Usage notes

A value of 0 indicates first observation in 2000, with increasing integers representing subsequent years. Canopy height and above ground biomass density values for years preceding first observation are extrapolated from the fitted model and should be interpreted with caution.

gap_type

Typeint8NoData-1

Description

Index indicating where gaps have been filled during canopy height post-processing.

IndexName
0No gap
1Gap-filled due to no imagery
2Gap-filled due to low quality imagery

last_observation

Typeint8NoData-1

Description

Offset in years from 2000-01-01 to last observation considered in fitting the canopy height time series for a pixel.

Usage notes

A value of 0 indicates last observation in 2000, with increasing integers representing subsequent years. Canopy height and above ground biomass density values for years following last observation are extrapolated from the fitted model and should be interpreted with caution.

median_observation_doy

Typeint16NoData-1

Description

Median day of year of observations that contributed to the Landsat green period composite.

Usage notes

Where the green period wraps across the year boundary, the median is calculated relative to start day variable, so that the reported value always falls inside the green period.

number_of_observations

Typeint16NoData-1Unitscount

Description

Number of valid scenes that contributed to the Landsat green period composite.

start_day

Typeint16NoData-1

Description

Day of year of the start of the green period, inclusive, which defines the temporal window of scenes that can contribute to the Landsat composites.

Usage notes

Values range from 1 to 366. Where start day variable is lower than end day variable, the green period runs from start day to end day within the same year. Where start day variable is higher than end day variable, the green period wraps across the year boundary, running from start day to the end of the year and continuing from the start of the year to end day.
