Global Forest Type
Description
This dataset classifies the forest type present for the year 2020, with global coverage at 10 m spatial resolution. Forested pixels are assigned one of 3 forest types.
c17fcd5f…Usage notes
This dataset is intended to support EUDR forest degradation risk assessments (i.e. initial state on 31 December 2020). For EUDR deforestation risk assessments, see JRC Global Forest Cover dataset. The dataset is non mandatory, non exclusive, and non legally binding for EUDR compliance. Data is preliminary, with improvements expected by end of 2025. See EU dataset listing page (below) for a list of known issues.
Variables
forest_type
Description
Index of the forest type. Data combines > 15 global datasets to categorise forested pixels from the JRC Global Forest Cover dataset into highly protected forest (primary forest) or reported planted/plantation forests. Remaining forest pixels are assumed to be naturally regenerating.
Usage notes
Classified forest types fit the EUDR forest type definition, simplified to fulfil EUDR requirements for initial state assessments. Primary forest may be misclassified due to a lack of consensus on its definition. Planted/plantation forest cover may be underestimated due to poor data availability. See also usage notes for JRC Global Forest Cover dataset.
| Index | Name |
|---|---|
| 0 | Non-forest |
| 1 | Naturally regenerating forest |
| 10 | Primary forest |
