# Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas - Baseline Annual

## Description

This dataset contains baseline water risk indicators with global coverage at the HydroBASINS Level 6 sub-basin scale (polygons). Thirteen indicators are available across three risk categories: physical risk quantity, physical risk quality, and regulatory and reputational risk. The baseline period is 1979-2019, representing long-term, chronic trends.

Physical risk quantity indicators cover baseline water stress, baseline water depletion, interannual variability, seasonal variability, groundwater table decline, riverine flood risk, coastal flood risk, and drought risk. Physical risk quality indicators cover untreated connected wastewater and coastal eutrophication potential. Regulatory and reputational risk indicators cover unimproved or no drinking water, unimproved or no sanitation, and the peak RepRisk country ESG risk index.

In addition to the 13 individual indicators, the dataset includes grouped water risk scores that aggregate indicators into sub-groups using a weighted composite approach. Grouped water risk variables are available for 10 industry weighting schemes: default, agriculture, chemicals, construction materials, electric power, food and beverage, mining, oil and gas, semiconductor, and textile.

## Usage notes

Individual indicator variables follow the naming convention {indicator}_{type}. Indicator codes are: bws (baseline water stress), bwd (baseline water depletion), iav (interannual variability), sev (seasonal variability), gtd (groundwater table decline), rfr (riverine flood risk), cfr (coastal flood risk), drr (drought risk), ucw (untreated connected wastewater), cep (coastal eutrophication potential), udw (unimproved or no drinking water), usa (unimproved or no sanitation), and rri (peak RepRisk country ESG risk index). Type codes are: raw (original raw indicator value), score (raw value mapped to a 0-5 scale), cat (integer representation of the score for use in visualisations, with values ranging from -1 to 4 depending on indicator; see variable reference tables for category definitions), and label (text description of the category, including its threshold). Thirteen indicators across four types give 52 indicator columns in total.

Grouped water risk variables follow the naming convention w_awr_{weighting_scheme}_{group}_{type}. Weighting scheme codes are: def (default), agr (agriculture), che (chemicals), con (construction materials), elp (electric power), fnb (food and beverage), min (mining), ong (oil and gas), smc (semiconductor), and tex (textile). Group codes are: qan (physical risk quantity), qal (physical risk quality), rrr (regulatory and reputational risk), and tot (total overall water risk). Type codes match those for individual indicators, with one addition: weight_fraction, which is only available for the tot group and represents the fraction of each risk group's contribution to the overall water risk score. NoData is excluded from the weights, so fractions may be lower than 1 depending on data availability. Ten weighting schemes across four groups and four types, plus ten weight fractions, give 170 grouped water risk columns in total.

Aqueduct risk indicators cannot be measured directly and have not been validated. This dataset is an update from the 2019 release, which included several improvements to the hydrological inputs of the baseline model. Comparisons with earlier versions of the data should be performed with caution. Aqueduct does not model interbasin transfers.
